For every website that can offer valuable information, there are just as many others that are misleading and in many cases, total scams.

This unfortunate reality has left many aspiring Entrepreneurs scratching their heads, wondering what to do next, and whether generating leads and earning from their websites is even possible.

Because of this, they give up on their dreams, and go back to the old way of life that they were desperately trying to escape.

LeadPages is becoming increasingly popular for small businesses or individuals who want to build a Landing Page.

They offer training and resources to get you started.

Pricing starts at $25 per month. I can almost hear you now. “Those rates are not bad at all.  They are lower than I expected.”

While the pricing may be ideal, you will want to consider whether over a long period of time if the platform will offer upgraded version to accommodate the growth of your business.

WishPond

WishPond is a Landing Page generator hosting a variety of online businesses. They offer built-in marketing tools and educational resources and the price is comparable to LeadPages.net.

WordPress.com

WordPress.com is probably THE largest online website builder. Major corporations and even government agencies use WordPress. The difference is, they use their own hosted versions of WordPress.

You will gain immediate credibility publishing a site on wordpress.com. On this site you can build your own complete website and even tie your domain to it.  The cost is free, but you pay for upgrades such as additional plugins for functionality or themes.

While this platform offers a lot of flexibility for creating whatever type of site you like, there is some limitations and it does require some additional training and may not be as quick to have up and running.

Lastly, to ensure your online success, spend time compiling all of your site content. This is the most important time you can spend. The better you are prepared, the quicker you can have your website up and running and the quicker you will generate leads that convert into sales. Also, you can use the same content for your website on Facebook, LinkedIn, and anywhere you post your products and services. Good content is the backbone of every successful website.

What are the drawbacks of using Website Builders?

As with everything, there is an “up” and there is a “down.” The downside to website builders is:

  • You have limited control over design and functionality. When you use a templated solution, you must create your site within the parameters it was designed in order to get the best results.  This is not a bad thing, it is just good to know up front so you get the best results
  • You don’t own your website. While you do own the content you create and the products or services, you do not own the website because it is hosted in an external environment. Be sure to find out what the company policy for handling your data, providing backups and migrating your data is should you choose to move to your own hosted solution or another company.
  • Monthly fee. You will always have a monthly fee and possibly additional charges for additional services you opt to have. Find out up front if there are any charges you need to be made aware of so there are no surprises on your bill.
  • Many platforms say they are easy but are often complex and require a developer or premium support. I have had people want me to migrate them from Wix or SquareSpace because it wasn’t as user friendly as they thought. Ask for a demo of the platform so you know if it is something you can easily manage.

On the flip side, these platforms are providing a valuable service to you and only you can determine if the value they provide works for your business model. Spend some time comparing solutions to see which one is right for you. After all, it is worth spending a small amount of money each month if it saves you time and makes you money in the long run.

One of the most frustrating things for me when using online builders was not having very good instructions to follow to get up and running.  The support was not great and I had to figure out a lot on my own.  So what did I do?

When I began researching my own answers to problems and working with the back-end of  my own sites to resolve technical issues that should not have had to do, I discovered, that I may have a solution that could benefit more than just me.

I was spending too much time trouble-shooting website issues.  I was spending too much time online with vendors, only to have to spend more time myself to resolve the issue. If you are a website owner you know this scenario all too well.  I have experienced it all.  I have heard the same complaints over and over from others who share my frustration.

Me, a web developer frustrated? You betcha!

My greatest frustration was that all my competitors were campaigning how their solution was so easy and I think that I was more upset that they were actually making money from people willing to tolerate their poor service, complain, and still pay the money because they need their website. Many times a company can be so financially vested in a solution they feel obligated to stay where they are solely for the mere reason that they spent a lot of money on the solution. But what is there to gain by complaining. Right? Frustration is good because it can lead to solutions.

Don’t get me wrong, these are good places to start out.  They’re a good way to learn the ropes, dip your feet in the website world, and learn a few things in the process.

If you do not experience problems, how do you know what a better solution is? You don’t have anything to compare to. Website builders have their place, just like social media platforms but you don’t want to become dependent upon them.
